Hey lovely people, wish you a very happy and prosperous 2020! Today I’m going to review Mamaearth Ultra Light Indian Sunscreen. This sunscreen is relatively a new product from Mamaearth. In the past, I have used multiple products of Mamaearth, including shampoo, conditioner, detangler, so when I came across their sunscreen for adults, I decided to give it a try. And now here I am with the review.
About the Company
Mamaearth is a brand owned by a couple who launched it to provide safe products for kids. They are Asia’s first MadeSafe certified brand in India. Apart from kids, they have products in pregnancy, women, and men grooming range.
One good thing about the company, they are plastic positive. This means they recycle more plastic than they use. Same has been mentioned on their site as well as product bottles.
In fact, their site provides a form to raise a request to recycle your plastic bottles. I submitted the request, but it seems currently they handle only in Gurugram. So if you happen to be in Gurugram, give it a shot to recycle your plastic.
Company claim about the product
A sunscreen with SPF 50, this provides protection from sun while it also doubles as a moisturizer. It does not dry out your skin and keeps it moisturized. Unlike other sunscreens, this is specially designed for Indian skin tone. It provides up to 6 hours of protection against UVA and UVB rays. It consists of natural ingredients and is free of paraben, mineral oil, silicone etc.
Ingredients
Let us see the ingredients used in this sunscreen.
As you can see from the above pic, this is a combination of natural and synthetic chemicals.
Usage directions
Usage directions are mentioned on the back of the bottle
1: Take a pea-size amount of cream on your fingertip.
2: Apply dots all over face & neck and massage in circular motion.
3: Massage all over the face & neck until the cream is completely absorbed.
Packaging
The sunscreen comes in a squeeze tube with a flip-top. The flip-top is tight and leakproof. You can comfortably carry this in your bag without any risk of leak. Lid is open in the above pic as the tube was almost empty at the time of this snap.
The details like claims, ingredients, usage are printed on the back.
Price
Cost of 80 ml sunscreen is INR 499, but it is generally available at a lower price on Mamaearth site.
Availability
This is available at all the major online stores including mamaearth site, Amazon and Flipkart
Smell
The sunscreen has herbal scent which may be overpowering for people with sensitive nose. Personally, I find it refreshing, and the smell does not stay for long and dissipates post-application.
Personal Experience
I have fully consumed this sunscreen and am now sharing my review of Mamaearth Ultra Light Indian Sunscreen.
Texture
Generally, high SPF sunscreens are very thick, and I find them difficult to apply. That’s not the case with this one. Even though it has high SPF, it has a light lotion-like texture. On application, it absorbs quickly and does not leave behind a white cast.
Suitable For
The company claims this sunscreen suitable for all skin types, including, oily and combination skin. After using it, I would say this is true. It did not break me out, or cause any other reaction. Due to this, I would recommend this sunscreen for oily, and acne-prone skin too.
For my dry to combination skin, this sunscreen did an excellent job of sunscreen + moisturizer. I didn’t need a moisturizer with this sunscreen.
Efficacy
It offers protection from both UVA and UVB range. The sun blockers is a combination of physical and chemical filters, and together they provide a broad range of protection.
I have used this for a typical day as well as a weekend beach getaway.
My average day sun exposure includes around 2 km walks three times a day, morn, afternoon and evening. This sunscreen did an excellent job of providing protection from suntan without breaking me out.
The weekend beach getaway involved chilling on the beach (aha!) and an occasional dripping in the sea. While both of these activities usually tan me, with this sunscreen applied, I did not see any significant tanning. In fact, I felt my skin was nicely moisturized even after being exposed to the sea.
Ever been in the embarrassing situation where on washing face, your carefully selected and applied sunscreen starts dripping with water? Totally not happened with this one. Even though I went in water with this used, it did not drip away in white layers.
Pros
- With high SPF, provides proper sun protection
- Good moisturization capability
- Does not break out
- Broad-spectrum protection as it allows for protection from both UVA and UVB rays
- Did not leave a white cast behind
- Easily blends in due to light lotion texture
- Free from paraben, silicones etc
Cons
- Like other Mamaearth products, only key ingredients list is listed on the tube. It would have been better to have complete ingredients’ list.
- Even though it claims to have natural ingredients, it contains chemical filters
- Pricey with 80 ml costing INR 499
Recommendation
This is yet another excellent product from Mamaearth. I will definitely recommend this sunscreen. If you have combi to oily skin use this alone to evaluate whether it provides enough moisturization. For dry skin, you can combine it with your favourite moisturizer.
Repurchase
Yep, I will get around to repurchasing this one.
