Mamaearth is a brand that stands true to its promise of delivering safe products by bringing science and Ayurveda together. Onion is a superhero that packs a load of nutrients not only for the body but for hair as well. Onion is rich in sulfur, which provides vital nutrients for keratin, the building block of hair. So understandably, I got super excited when Mamaearth launched the onion hair product range. Having used this shampoo for some time now, I am ready with the review of Mamaearth Onion Shampoo.
Is Onion Shampoo good for hair?
Onion is a powerful source of sulfur. And sulfur is needed by our hair to promote growth and treat any deficiencies. There is a variety of using onion for hair, but most of them involve messy processes and onion smell. One of the easiest ways is using onion juice on the scalp.
If you use fresh onion on your scalp, you have to deal with a pungent smell that oftentimes does not fade even after washing the hair. This makes it really difficult to include onion in the haircare routine. So, how do you get the benefits of onion without the smell?
Enter onion shampoo! Onion shampoo combines the power of onion with other ingredients to mask the smell and make it super easy to use.
About the product
Sulfate-Free Shampoo Gently Cleanses & Nourishes Hair Reduces Hairfall & Strengthens Roots
Dermatologically tested. Free from harmful chemicals. Suitable for coloured and treated hair

Packaging
The shampoo comes in a white, opaque, pump bottle. The front of the bottle contains the name while the back includes details, like description, ingredients, and directions. Due to the opaque container, it is difficult to tell how much product is remaining.
The bottle contains a pump to dispense the shampoo. The pump had to be rotated to open the first time. But the pump needs to be pressed to close, which causes wastage while closing it. So I have left it open only.
It would have been better if the pump contained a twist-lock, commonly found in sanitizers/other bottles, to open or close.

Mamaearth Onion Shampoo Ingredients
This shampoo contains onion oil, keratin, and D-panthenol along with gentle cleansers to cleanse as well as nourish the hair. Yes, this is sulfate and silicone-free shampoo.

How to use it?
The bottle contains clear directions on how to use the product.

It asks to gently massage the shampoo onto wet hair with fingertips (not nails!) to work into a lather. I, however, use it a little differently.
I like to mix this with water in a separate glass and then spread it on my head. This way, it generates good lather and reaches under the hair quickly with minimal tangles.
How is mamaearth onion shampoo?
Let’s start with product details before diving into my review and how it fared for my hair.
Mamaearth onion shampoo details
Price: 349 INR
Quantity: 250 ml
Appearance: Pearly white translucent
Lather: Decent lather when appropriately diluted with water. I like the lather it produces even though it doesn’t contain SLS/SLES.
Fragrance: Does Mamaearth onion shampoo smell of onions? Absolutely not! In fact, it has light traces of jasmine smell. I find it pretty refreshing even though I don’t like jasmine smell.
Leak-proof: The bottle is not leak-proof since it is difficult to close the pump correctly. It wouldn’t be a problem when it’s sitting in the washroom counter, but shampoo may leak if kept in a bag with an open pump.
Travel-friendly: Not really. The 250ml big bottle is pretty significant to keep in a bag. I generally take out a little amount and collect in another travel-friendly (read small, leak-proof) bottle.
Availability: The shampoo is available in most of the online stores, including Amazon, Flipkart, and mamaearth website.
Mamaearth onion shampoo review
I liked the lather it produced and the ease with which I could spread it on my head. This spreadability meant I didn’t have to rub my hair to make sure shampoo reached everywhere. This meant I had fewer tangles and breakage while washing my hair.
I have used this on oiled as well as non-oiled hair. On oiled hair, it removed the oil effectively in one wash and made hair soft. When used with non-oiled hair it didn’t dry out hair during the wash. Both the times I followed it up with the conditioner or hair mask from the same range.
After air-drying, my hair were softer and much more manageable .
It rinses easily without leaving any residue. In fact, hair feels soft while rinsing itself.
Product Claims
The product claims to reduce hair fall, and in my instance, I observed it was right to its claim. As this shampoo reduced the tangles during wash, hair was softer with few knots once dried. These tangles were easily removed using a wide-tooth comb, and the result was much more manageable hair.
